A Precious Gift

My biological father (right) and my Uncle Junie (left)

Our 5 year wedding anniversary is coming up this Saturday and I want to share about one of the most precious wedding gifts I received, a photo of my biological father from my Aunt Joyce (his sister).

We received many beautiful gifts that we are so grateful for but this one I hold very very dear to my heart because it is the only photo I have of my father in my possession. It is amazing how something so simple could be so valuable. The gesture of this gift brought me so much joy, almost as if my father made his presence in such a special time in my life.

For those of you who do not know, my father took his own life when I was three years old. I have seen a few other photos of my father but this one is especially different and special because he’s in his younger years in, what appears to be, a happy time that he was sharing with my Uncle Junie.

I believe in the presence of the Holy Spirit and of family that has passed on. I remember feeling my father’s presence many times in my life. Each year when the first cold front in the fall comes in, I feel him. When a light snow fell down in San Antonio (which is very rare), I was in college and struggling, I felt him; light snow came down on his funeral too. When my “Uncle” Steve was dying of cancer, the last visit at the hospital I had with him, he mentioned my father’s pocket Bible (the one my foster daddy carried in his pocket on our wedding day), I felt him. I have no idea how he knew about that Bible because it was a personal thing between my daddy, my mom (who is his sister, they are technically my cousins since I was raised by family) and me. I never talked about my father with him either.

If the Spirit moves you to do something just as simple as giving a copy of a special photo, don’t hesitate to give it because you never know how much it will mean to someone else. Love comes in many ways even small ways are still precious.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 NIV

Thank you for reading and have a blessed week!
